Refuge NYC Turns One With a Month of Long Sets
Brooklyn’s Refuge hits its first anniversary this weekend. John Dimatteo and Craig “Shorty” Bernabeu opened the 500-cap room at 360 Ten Eyck in September 2025 as a hi-def dance club: custom REX analogue system, no VIP, phones discouraged, sound first. Billboard clocked 210 events and more than 100,000 guests from 1,300 cities in year one. The anniversary season runs September 5 through 27. Saturday: Gabriel and Dresden by day, David Morales for twelve hours that night. Sunday: Natasha Diggs by day, Morales again after dark. Later dates hold Rodriguez Jr. live, The Martinez Brothers, Deep Dish open to close on the 25th, and Brothers Macklovitch on the 27th. This is a working New York house room treating the calendar like a residency, not a launch party.
Nightlife Workers Asked for Hours That Match the Job
Free The Night and Save The Scene Scotland filed a joint response this week to the UK government’s Make Work Pay consultation on zero-hours contracts. Boyd Sleator put it plainly: nightlife needs flexibility. What it does not need is a system where the business can cancel at the last minute and the worker eats the cost. The paper asks for a 12-week reference period before regular shifts can become a banded-hours contract, a 20-hour floor so low-hours deals do not replace zero-hours ones, two weeks’ notice on shifts, and seven days’ notice on cancellations with pay based on actual earnings. RA and DJ Mag both carried it. Rooms only stay open if the people who run them can plan a week.
Dave Lee Dropped the 2026 Z Records Island Set
ZR Ibiza 2026 - Island Of Love landed August 28 on Z Records. Sixteen tracks, about an hour and a half, compiled by Dave Lee. Sessomatto, The Joneses, Fibre Foundation, Ron Carroll, The Sunburst Band, Opolopo, Mike T, D-Rail, Yolanda Wyns. Four exclusives in the pack. This is the annual ZR summer document, not a teaser playlist. Lee still writes and reworks in the same lane he has held since the Joey Negro years: disco arrangement, house drum, no costume. If you program FlashDance or any room that still wants a vocal and a bassline that sits, this is the named compilation of the window. Play the Fibre Foundation rework and the Ron Carroll cut first.

Hotmood kept the Discoweey lane moving. Nobody Cares plus Boogie Celebration give the mid-tempo, bassline-forward hour a contemporary spine that does not need a major-label story attached. Sweetie Pie is dated September 4 on House Syndicate if you want the next one on the sheet.
Babert put Love and Happiness out August 28 on Disco Revenge. Four minutes, no costume. Disco Explosion from August 14 is still circulating in the same bag. Both belong between 120 and 125.
Kideko - The Message landed August 28 on Future Disco. Follow-up to Burning Love. Sun-drenched nu-disco that does the job without pretending it invented the form.
Star Creature stayed in the rare-groove lane. Donnell Pitman, Wings of Sunshine, and E. Live’s Party In My Car got a Mirlaqi remix August 26. That label still sources the way FlashDance wants source material sourced.
Dusty Donuts 45s out of Hamburg remains a working edit shop. Jazz flips, floor edits, 7-inch culture you can actually mix. Start at the Bandcamp and work backwards through the black-label series.
Disco Tech’s Universal Love Reworks package is still sitting on Bandcamp. Rework plus dub. Take a known feeling, tighten the drum, leave the soul in place.
Horse Meat Disco is back at Amnesia Friday, September 4, for Glitterbox with David Morales, Jayda G, Fat Tony, Melvo Baptiste, and Seamus Haji. Then Prince Charles in Berlin on the 5th and Knockdown Center in Queens on the 6th. The Mr Bongo compilation Disco and Boogie From Brazil Vol. 1 is still the listening homework if you want to hear how they source.
Flying Mojito Bros remain the cleanest current focus on desert disco and outlaw house. The Swamp Fox, the Tony Joe White collaboration with Polk Salad Annie and Alligator, is still the record to work. Just Passing Through on Ubiquity sits next to it. Dates that matter this week and next: September 4 at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park in Garrettsville, Ohio; September 6 at Cervantes in Denver; September 19 at Loft Studios in London on a bill with Todd Terje and Idjut Boys; October 9 at Valley of the Seven Stars in Arrington, Virginia.
